PAA5 – 5% Peroxyacetic Acid in Hydrogen Peroxide

NZFSA Approved C43 – Biodegradable

PAA 5 is a powerful sanitiser effective against bacteria and their spores, yeasts, moulds, fungi, and their spores, and viruses.

PAA 5’s sanitising action is rapid even at ambient temperatures.

PAA 5 is of particular use for sanitising in breweries, cordial manufacturing plant and milk handling equipment as it is non-foaming, passivates stainless steel, may be used under a carbon dioxide head, and breaks down to acetic acid and oxygen.

Directions

WARNING: PAA 5 must be handled carefully – avoid contact with eyes and skin. Wear gloves, protective clothing and eye protection to avoid burns. Breathing the vapour from strong solutions may induce vomit- ing.

Surfaces to be sanitised with PAA 5 must be clean and rinsed free of any residual alkalinity. Any soiling or alkalinity present on the surface reduces the effectiveness of the PAA 5 significantly.

Dilution rates for sanitising vary from 1:100 to 1:500, giving from 500ppm peroxyacetic acid to 100ppm re- spectively, normally in cold or ambient water temperature. For different situations contact time may be re- quired to vary from 10 to 30 minutes. Sanitising solutions may be spray balled, fogged, or used to soak the surface that requires sanitising. Aerobic bacteria are killed quickly with low concentrations of peroxyacetic acid, fungi need 1% concentration for 30 minutes.

Working solutions of PAA 5 must be used within an hour of preparation. PAA 5 is most effective at acidic pH – a 1:100 dilution will have a pH of about 3.2 – hence the need to rinse away any alkalinity prior to sanitising. The plant usually does not need to be rinsed after sanitising as PAA 5 drains like water – any residue will be traces of acetic acid and hydrogen peroxide – and PAA 5 has MAF approval for no-rinse sanitising at concen- trations up to 200ppm or 4ml per litre for fish processing equipment only.

PAA 5 is suitable for sanitising stainless steel, or glass vessels and pipework. Compatibility with gaskets, rubbers or polymers should be checked. Do not use on mild steel, aluminium or copper and copper alloys.

Technical

PAA 5 contains up to 5% w/w peroxyacetic acid, over 25% hydrogen peroxide and about 7.5% acetic acid, and has a pungent odour. The density is 1.13kg/l approx.

PAA 5 is available in 25kg carboys, 225kg drums and 1200kg tanks.

First Aid

SKIN CONTACT: Flush immediately with cool water for at least 15 minutes, neutralise with a reducing agent such as sodium thiosulphate, sodium sulphite or sodium metabisulphite.

EYE CONTACT: Flush immediately with cool water for at least 15 minutes, ring ambulance.

INGESTION: Do not induce vomiting. Give two glasses of water or milk. Seek medical advice promptly.
